There may be a greater risk of incidents between the United States and Chinese navies in the South China Sea because the US military has been given more decision-making authority, a Chinese think tank warned on Tuesday.

In a report, the think tank said the White House National Security Council had become less involved in US military activities in the disputed region, despite an increase in their frequency and intensity.

“The US military will continue intensifying military operations in the South China Sea, constantly exploring the grey zones between peace and conflict, and probing China’s bottom line, which will inevitably push the threshold of small-scale armed conflict and war,” according to the report released by Peking University’s South China Sea Strategic Situation Probing Initiative.

Think tank isn't telling us anything new.

I like the bit about the US exploring the grey area between peace and war.
China’s ignored every international norm regarding international boarders even going so far as to rewrite history books to sell it at home.
Most of the South China Sea their trying to claim as their own is international waters. They could just start building platforms and drilling using the military to protect them. But no let’s sail into Vietnam’s territory and seize platforms. It’s like they are intent on demonstrating they can be as imperialist as the colonial powers were.
Voila! no real conflict, but there’s no victory in that. Their going to pick a fight until they start a war or significant numbers die, such a waste.

This is a problem China is going to face in the future. With their predatory loans and confiscation of collateral, the people in those countries are going to feel the same way they did about any other empire who tried to dominate another country.

China is setting itself up for an empire that is going to rebel in the future, and they won't be able to oppress like they do at home.
