Russia on Thursday accused Norway of pushing ahead with a military build-up which it said increased the risks of military action and required some kind of Russian response.

Maria Zakharova, a spokeswoman for Russia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said Moscow had watched as NATO member Norway had become more and more active in helping the Western military alliance build up its presence in the Arctic region.

Zakharova singled out what she said was a Norwegian plan to this year equip a port near Tromso to be able to receive nuclear submarines. "Contrary to the historical traditions of neighbourly relations and cooperation in the Arctic, Oslo continues to escalate tension and increase the risks of military action. This will not be left without a response," Zakharova told reporters.

"The Russian Federation will take all possible measures to ensure its own security."

Norway, which shares a 196-kilometer (122-mile) land border with Russia, has said it is concerned about Moscow building up its own military capacity on the Kola Peninsula, a region dotted with naval bases and restricted military zones. ... vity-64438

“Contrary to the historical traditions of neighborly relations and cooperation in the Arctic, Oslo continues to escalate tension and increase the risk of military action. This will not be left without a response,” Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told reporters on Thursday at her weekely press briefing.

Last year, Navy Captain Per-Thomas Bøe with Norway’s Defense Ministry confirmed to the Barents Observer that NATO submarines are more frequently given permission to sail inshore the coast, especially in northern Norway. “3 to 4 per month,” he said.

With more naval activities in Arctic waters, U.S. and British submarines choose to surface in northern Norway for crew change or receiving supplies, rather than sailing all south to Norway’s main naval base Haakonsvern outside Bergen or to submarine ports in the U.K.

With the 2009 closure of Olavsvern naval base near Tromsø, allied submarines have lacked a secured port facility in the north. To compensate, Norwegian authorities are now allowing for port calls to Grøtsund / Tønsnes civilian industrial port a-half-hour-sailing north of Tromsø.

“There are more and more examples of Norway’s active participation in the implementation of NATO’s plans to increase the Alliance’s presence in the Arctic region. In 2019, this list will be supplemented with a contribution to creation of infrastructure for servicing submarines in the North Atlantic. In particular, a separate port for receiving nuclear submarines will be equipped not far from Tromsø in northern Norway,” Zakharova said according to the transcript from the briefing.

Grøtsund harbor is 375 kilometers (as the crow flies) west of Norway’s border to Russia’s Kola Peninsula. ... rine-ports

Oh whoopdy do. Putin has his britches in a bunch because an old sub base is moving a little closer to them because the old one was closed due to Russia behaving themselves.

As the Russians inflate their presence in the Arctic, we have every right to respond, and our allies have every right to prepare their defenses. The Russian gripe of "how dare you stop me from attacking you ahead of time? That's not fair" is getting old.
