The Turkish Trade Ministry has said Turkey would keep defending domestic steel and aluminum exporters on any international platform against additional United States tariffs, which are “against World Trade Organization [WTO] rules.”

The ministry statement came after U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to double tariffs on aluminum and steel imports from Turkey to 20 percent and 50 percent, respectively.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has sharply criticized the United States decision to double tariffs on Turkish steel and aluminum imports, calling the move as an “operation” and portraying the plunge in the Turkish currency’s value as an “economic war” against Turkey.

“It is making an operation against Turkey … Its aim is to force Turkey to surrender in every field from finance to politics, to make Turkey and the Turkish nation kneel down,” Erdoğan said in a speech at the ruling Justice and Development Party’s (AKP) meeting in the Black Sea province of Trabzon on Aug. 12.

“We have seen your play and we challenge you,” he added, referring to the fluctuation of the Turkish Lira against the dollar.

On Aug. 10, the lira, which had already lost more than a quarter of its value against foreign currencies in 2018, tumbled to a fresh low of more than 6.6 per dollar following U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to double tariffs on aluminum and steel imports from Turkey to 20 percent and 50 percent, respectively.

An American Christian pastor standing trial in Turkey on terrorism charges has appealed again to a Turkish court to release him from house arrest and lift his travel ban, his lawyer told Reuters on Aug. 14.

The lawyer İsmail Cem Halavurt had filed a similar demand before to the court, but his appeal on July 31 was rejected.

In a presidential decree published in the Official Gazette on Aug. 15, Ankara said it was imposing extra tariffs on imports of products, including rice, tobacco products, vehicles, alcohol, coal and cosmetics.

The decree, signed by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, doubled Turkish tariffs on passenger cars to 120 percent, on alcoholic drinks to 140 percent and on leaf tobacco to 60 percent.

Turkey’s Vice President Fuat Oktay said on Twitter that the tariffs on certain products were increased "within the framework of the principle of reciprocity in retaliation for the conscious economic attacks by the United States."

Turkey’s disappointment regarding the Trump administration’s stance is much deeper because it has not taken into account its ally’s national security concerns, the Turkish government has said in response to a statement from a White House official that United States President Donald Trump is frustrated Turkey has not released pastor Andrew Brunson.

“The president has a great deal of frustration on the fact that pastor Brunson has not been released as well as the fact that other U.S. citizens and employees of diplomatic facilities have not been released,” said White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders in a statement on Aug. 14.

“The U.S. or any other country should not just focus on their own frustrations. They should also take into account our frustrations [with regard to their policies]. We also have frustrations,” Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu told reporters on Aug. 15 in response to a question on Sanders’ statement.

Turkey has said it is willing to speak with the US to resolve an ongoing dispute between the two NATO allies, as the White House appeared to ratchet up pressure on Ankara.

Speaking to a group of foreign ambassadors in Ankara on Wednesday evening, Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu appeared to extend an olive branch to US President Donald Trump's administration.

"Despite everything, we are ready to talk about everything to solve the existing problems as equal partners," he said. "I speak openly but only on one condition - no threatening, no dictating.

Turkey could end the crisis with the United States “instantly” by freeing a detained American pastor, President Donald Trump’s national security adviser said, adding that a Qatari cash infusion would not help Ankara’s economy.

The Turkish currency has been losing since Washington ordered tariffs in retaliation for the detention of Pastor Andrew Brunson on charges of complicity in a failed 2016 coup.

Brunson denies wrongdoing, and Ankara has in the past suggested his fate could be linked to that of a U.S.-based Turkish cleric whom President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan accuses of orchestrating the attempted coup.

“Look, the Turkish government made a big mistake in not releasing Pastor Brunson,” Bolton told Reuters in an interview during a visit to Israel.

“Every day that goes by that mistake continues, this crisis could be over instantly if they did the right thing as a NATO ally, part of the West, and release pastor Brunson without condition.”

Asked if the United States questioned Turkey’s membership in NATO given the stand-off, Bolton said: “That’s not an issue at the moment. We’re focused on Pastor Brunson and the other Americans that the Turkish government’s holding illegitimately and we expect that to get resolved.”

The Turkish prosecutor who indicted U.S. pastor Andrew Brunson has been reassigned to a new position.

Justice Minister Abdulhamit Gül confirmed local media reports in a press conference in Ankara on Sept. 6, while downplaying the significance of the decision.

The prosecutor was reportedly removed from the anti-terror bureau and assigned to the bureau of cybercrimes by a chief prosecutor’s office which also reassigned five more prosecutors.

“He was the prosecutor who had prepared the Brunson indictment. He was not the prosecutor of the case itself. This is a routine procedure. Such actions can be taken out of necessity,” Gül said. “The decision was taken by the İzmir Chief Prosecutor’s Office. Justice is served through the system, not persons.”
