Here's a chronology of the recent chain of events common to NATO and the Russian Federation:

NATO begins Sabre Strike 2016, a large-scale exercise centered in Estonia and aimed at Russia. It involves 10,000 personnel and thirteen countries. The German Foreign Minister practically argues that Sabre Strike 2016 would be more aptly named "Sabre Rattle 2016." [2016/5/27]

NATO initiates BALTOPS 2016, a large-scale naval exercise in the Baltic involving 43 to 49 ships, one submarine, more than sixty aircraft, and in excess of 5,000 military personnel. [2016/6/3]

NATO begins Anakonda 2016, the largest drill to occur in Eastern Europe since the end of the Cold War. 31,000 soldiers, several thousand vehicles and twenty-four countries took part. Paratroopers, armor, helicopters and infantrymen appear to practice retaking Poland following a simulated Russian invasion and occupation. [2016/6/6]

Upon the arrival of an American "employee" at an American embassy in Russia, a Russian policeman instantly left his guard shack at the entrance and attacked the American. The Russian attempted to subdue the American, pinning him to the ground. The American struggled and gradually pulled himself, and the Russian atop him, through the doors into the US embassy. At that point, the Russian policeman was attacking an American citizen on sovereign American territory. This could technically be construed as an "invasion" and "act of war," though the America pulled the Russian onto American territory in a sense. The link contains video of the incident. [2016/6/6]

A week later, Russia initiates a large-scale snap drill in response to NATO's various exercises and upcoming NATO summit. This appears to have involved the impressively rapid mobilization of three divisions amounting to 30,000 to 60,000 soldiers, relocating them to the Russian/NATO border. [2016/6/14]

A few days later, America expelled two Russian diplomats from the United States. [2016/6/17]

Also that day, the Russian Air Force and American Air Force "skirmish" over Syria. Russia was attempting to bomb US-backed "ISIS militants" who America classifies as "moderate rebels." American fighters attempted to keep the Russian bombers at bay, but eventually ran low on fuel and were forced to abort their mission. The Russians then proceeded to bomb the US-backed targets. On the same day an incident occurred at sea between a Russian naval vessel and an American naval vessel in the Mediterranean. [2016/6/17]

Also that day, speaking to western reporters, Putin made this statement: "We know year by year what’s going to happen, and they know that we know. It’s only you that they tell tall tales to, and you buy it, and spread it to the citizens of your countries. You people in turn do not feel a sense of the impending danger – this is what worries me. How do you not understand that the world is being pulled in an irreversible direction? While they pretend that nothing is going on. I don’t know how to get through to you anymore." This link contains video of the statement in question. [2016/6/17]

That day as well, Russia directly countered the American diplomatic response by expelling two American diplomats from Russia. [2016/6/17]

Erdogan makes a phone call to Putin in an effort to improve relations, cooperation and trade. Russia lifts sanctions that had been placed on Turkey following last year's aircraft downing. [2016/06/29]

Putin begins working on developing an alliance with Finland, attempting to sway their historic WW2 enemies away from NATO. Putin suggests that if Finland formalizes relations with NATO, it may lead to the absolute destruction of the Fin military, fighting "down to the last Finnish soldier." Putin suggests that the Russian soldiers that Finland should be most concerned about are stationed 1,500 kilometers away from the Finish border. "Do you think we will keep it as it is: our troops at 1,500 (kilometers, 900 miles) away?" This would imply that the soldiers Putin has in mind aren't on the Finnish border, but halfway across Russia, beyond Moscow, beyond the Ural Mountains. Given that Russia appears to have recently rapidly mobilized three divisions in a snap drill to the Russian/NATO border in response to NATO's various exercises, Putin may have been pointing out that more manpower is available to him than is currently challenging NATO at the border, and if Finland were to align formally with NATO, a portion of that currently unused manpower would be directed against Finland. Days later, Putin dispatched a telegram to Obama, which again called for cooperation and friendship between Russia and America, and also reassuring Obama that Russia's diplomacy with America is set as normalized, stable, and "relations open." [2016/7/4]

That same day, Putin "cancelled all planned engagements for the rest of the week." [2016/7/4]

Turkey announced that a meeting has been arranged between Erdogan and Putin for the purpose of repairing relations between the two nations. [2016/7/5]

NATO pledges "more support to Ukraine and Georgia," says "it poses no threat to any country." Cites "Russia's actions, especially in Ukraine" among its "unprecedented range of security challenges" in the opening line of the communique. Doesn't cite any other threats specific to Ukraine and Georgia aside from Russia. [2016/7/8]

Also that day, Erdogan (Turkey) met with Poroshenko (Ukraine) and condemned the Russian "oppression of Crimean Tatars." [2016/7/8]

Referring to the NATO communique, Gorbachev states, “All the rhetoric used in Warsaw is almost a declaration of war against Russia. The Cold War is preparing to get hot.” [2016/7/9]

Putin stressed the “provocative nature” of Ukraine’s military operations in the Donbass region, and called on Merkel and Hollande to pressure Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko into complying with the Minsk agreements.

One, Ukraine has every right to maneuver in its own country and ensure its security. Two , Russia hasn't complied with the Budapest Memorandum. Vlad is the last person that should talk about compliance with treaties.
