“This incident stands out against the usual fight against terrorism. Our troops are fighting heroically against terrorists, risking their lives. But the loss we suffered today came from a stab in the back delivered by accomplices of the terrorists,” Putin said.
“IS has big money, hundreds of millions or even billions of dollars, from selling oil. In addition they are protected by the military of an entire nation. One can understand why they are acting so boldly and blatantly. Why they kill people in such atrocious ways. Why they commit terrorist acts across the world, including in the heart of Europe,” the Russian leader said.
The fact that Turkey did not try to contact Russia in the wake of the incident and rushed to call a NATO meeting instead is worrisome, Putin said. It appears that Turkey want NATO to serve the interests of IS, he added.

Rebels are happy about this and openly taunting Russia, Will Russia start striking all rebel positions and if so what will the USA do about it, I got a bad feeling about this.

:o

*More News: The Russian jet was just over the Syrian border when it was downed by F16 Fighting Falcon jets belonging to Turkey, the Turkish official said.

First time I have ever seen a SU24 Taken out by an AMERICAN F16

A RUSSIAN helicopter has been downed while searching for the pilots who ejected from their burning jet, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has confirmed.

NOW THEY ARE SHOOTING AT SEARCH HELICOPTERS....Turkey do you have a death wish!!!!!!!!!

Wow, no coffee yet and THIS!? And so it begins: the tit-for-tat with any opportunity to shoot down a Turk plane in Syria or catch their hand in the Syrian cookie jar. It all falls on what Putin does, regardless of any 'meetings.' He is super pissed that Turkey talked to NATO first instead of calling the Kremlin to de-escalate.

What would they have told Russia first, other than somerhing like, "What'd I tell ya?"

Oswald wrote:I'm guessing the rebels that shot the helo down were AL Nursra. The choppers appear not to have been near the border.
Reports I've seen mention it was taken down by rebels with a US made TOW AT missile.

Geopolitics aside, how plausible is that, technically?

Haha, yes. Any talk is good talk. The red phone is there so as to not think with fear and end the world.

Update: IF this this video is of this incident, it was landed when they took it out, so perfectly plausible.
I can't ID specific AT missile systems, but it was tripod mounted, wire guided i think, and the instructions are in english...

CNN read a lot of Putin's statements, one being that he insisted the SU-24 was 1km from the Turkish border and never crossed it. Looks like the Turkish tracking map shows that the aircraft did cross the border. I guess we will see what kind of evidence comes out.

Here is a another quote of Putin:
“Today’s tragic event will have significant consequences, including for Russia-Turkish relations ... Instead of immediately getting in contact with us, as far as we know, the Turkish side immediately turned to their partners from Nato to discuss this incident, as if we shot down their plane and not they ours.”
