Pakistan says it has refused a request by India's President Ram Nath Kovind to fly through its airspace due to New Delhi's recent "behaviour".

The decision on Saturday comes amid heightened tensions between the two neighbours over the disputed region of Kashmir.

"The Indian president had sought permission to use Pakistan's airspace to travel to Iceland but we decided not to permit him," Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi said in a statement, without giving further details.

Pakistan’s foreign ministry says “unprovoked firing” by Indian troops in the disputed region of Kashmir has killed three civilians, including two children.

A ministry statement says it has summoned on Wednesday an Indian diplomat to lodge its protest over the previous day’s “cease-fire violations” that also wounded eight people on the Pakistani side of the contested Kashmir border.

Pakistani officials say their troops returned fire, but it was unclear whether there were any casualties on the Indian side.

He is apparently now threatening DC Muzaffarabad to not release Pak Army casualty numbers. Why hide? https://t.co/ThqICGAvP6

India and Pakistan blamed one another for cross-border shelling in the disputed Kashmir region which killed and injured soldiers and civilians on both sides and made it one of the deadliest days since New Delhi revoked Kashmir’s special status in August.
Reuters was unable to independently verify the claims made by both sides on the shelling, which marks an escalation from the small arms fire usually exchanged by the two armies.

There was an unprovoked ceasefire violation by Pakistan, said Indian defense spokesman Colonel Rajesh Kalia.

“Our troops retaliated strongly causing heavy damage and casualties to the enemy,” Kalia said.

An Indian army source said the shelling was cover to assist militants enter India because of which a “calibrated escalation of area weapons was undertaken.” The Indian army “retains the right to respond at a time and place of it’s choosing” if the Pakistani army continues to do this, he said.
