USS Nimitz left the Arabian/Persian Gulf and entered 7th Fleet area of operations one day ago. Will make port calls as she sails to her homeport in Norfolk.
So, she sails east from the Persian Gulf towards the US west coast when her home port is on the US east coast?

especially considering our carriers are too wide for the panama canal so they would have to go around south America.

Disregard this. The Nimitz's home port is Seattle, not Norfolk.

Apologize for the confusion. I read quickly on Wikipedia, and I didn't read the full sentence.
Nimitz had her homeport at Naval Station Norfolk until 1987, when she was relocated to Naval Station Bremerton in Washington State (now part of Naval Base Kitsap). Following her Refueling and Complex Overhaul in 2001, her home port was changed to Naval Air Station North Island in San Diego, California. The home port of Nimitz was again moved to Naval Station Everett in Washington state in 2012.
In addition, I read this just now.: The U.S. Navy plans to stage a rare, three-carrier exercise in the next few weeks off the Korean Peninsula, which could coincide with President Trump's visit to South Korea, Japan, and China next month.

So, in other news, Mike Pence visited the Minot Air Force Base today. The home to 26 B-52 bombers and 150 intercontinental ballistic missile sites. Interesting in relation to the report that the US is Ppeparing to put nuclear bombers back on 24-hour alert (although that story was somewhat debunked.) He gave a speech there, where he, mostly, echoed parts of Trumps UN speech.
“Our enemies should never doubt the capabilities of the Armed Forces of the United States of America”
“Anyone who would threaten our nation should know that America always seeks peace, but if we are forced to defend ourselves or our allies, we will do so with military power that is effective and overwhelming”
“Now, more than ever, your commander in chief is depending on you to be ready”
Additional info:
The trip to Minot comes on the heels of a series of highly classified briefings Pence has participated in the last two months with the National Geospatial Intelligence, the National Security Agency, the National Reconnaissance Office and the DNI, according to an official familiar with the briefings who spoke on condition of anonymity. Those briefings also focused on the North Korean threat.
