The DEFCON Warning System Desktop App

For Windows 10, 8.1, and 7. May or may not work on Vista and XP.

This app will poll the DEFCON Warning System website for the current alert code and display an icon in your taskbar. If the alert code is upgraded (5 to 4, 4 to 3, etc.), it will sound an tone and optionally display a pop-up alerting you to the change.

Optionally, it will also monitor our Twitter feed and will display our tweets in your Message Centre so you don't have to manually watch it yourself.

You can control how often it polls both the site for the alert code as well as how often it polls twitter. You can also set these to never poll. (For those who must exercise stringent control on when data is being used.)

This app has been tested on Windows 7, 8.1, and 10. It may run on Vista and XP, but those versions are not supported.

To install the app, double-click on the file name. It will install itself into its own directory.

Windows will sometimes "helpfully" hide icons for you. If the DEFCON icons do not display (one is a nuclear symbol, the other is a little box with the alert code number and colour showing), you will need to manually set these icons to show. Right click on your task bar. Click "Taskbar Settings". Scroll down to "Select which icons appear on the taskbar". Find both our icons. They are both called "DEFCON Warning System". Switch the slider to "On". The icons will now display.

If you right-click on the nuclear symbol tray icon, it will bring up a menu with the following items:

- Show tweets: This will bring up a little window which will display our recent tweets. You can choose to always keep this window on top as well as to refresh the tweets.

- Check DEFCON level: This will manually check the DEFCON alert code. Useful if you have polling turned off or set very high. Normally you would never need to use this option.

- Twitter polling interval: Set how often the app will poll Twitter for new tweets.

- Defcon polling interval: Set how often the app will poll our site for the alert code. Defaults to 10 minutes. Best to leave it at that.

- Defcon alert type: Select whether you want the alert tone to sound or if you want the pop-up box to show if the alert is upgraded. (Neither occurs if the alert code is downgraded.)

- Hide this menu: Click to hide the pop-up menu. Generally clicking off the menu will accomplish the same thing.

- About: Displays copyright and programmer information.

- Exits the app. Will autorun next time you start your computer.

At the bottom is a link to our website. Additionally, if an upgrade for the app becomes available, it will display a link near the top.

Version 3.0 of the desktop app has been released.

This is a major upgrade and is highly recommended.

This app now not only polls for the alert condition code, but also for DEFCON tweets and will display tweets in your message centre.
