The failed missile test that ended in an explosion killing five scientists last week on Russia’s White Sea involved a small nuclear reactor, according to a top official at the institute where they worked.

The institute is working on small-scale power sources that use “radioactive materials, including fissile and radioisotope materials” for the Defense Ministry and civilian uses, Vyacheslav Soloviev, scientific director of the institute, said in a video shown by local TV.

The men, who will be buried Monday, were national heroes and the “elite of the Russian Federal Nuclear Center,” institute Director Valentin Kostyukov said in the video, which was also posted on an official website in Sarov, a high-security city devoted to nuclear research less than 400 kilometers (250 miles) east of Moscow.

The blast occurred Aug. 8 during a test of a missile that used “isotope power sources” on an offshore platform in the Arkhangelsk region, close to the Arctic Circle, Russia’s state nuclear company Rosatom said over the weekend. The Defense Ministry initially reported two were killed in the accident, which it said involved testing of a liquid-fueled missile engine. The ministry didn’t mention the nuclear element.

The President of the United States
The United States is learning much from the failed missile explosion in Russia. We have similar, though more advanced, technology. The Russian “Skyfall” explosion has people worried about the air around the facility, and far beyond. Not good!

It's certainly not because of some health threat. I don't know of a health threat that only lasts for two hours.

Russian media reports that planned new tests at the Severodvinsk site where the missile exploded have been cancelled, and villagers don't have to evacuate for two hours tomorrow morning after all. The publicity for this evacuation became too uncomfortable.

Locals from the closed military settlement on the White Sea coast were today told that they will have to leave the area on Wednesday morning between 5-7 am.

The evacuation is planned and has nothing to do with last week’s missile explosion, representatives of Russian military authorities explained to the locals, 29.ru reports. Trains will pick up the locals and bring them out of the area.

«This is a planned measure, it happens regularly - about once per month and everybody is evaluated away from the village,» a local inhabitant told 29.ru.

«Previously, some locals remained in the village, but now after the recent events, I think they will evacuate everyone,» the local added.

The village located on the coast of the White Sea about 20 km west of Severodvinsk has a population of about 450 people

Arkhangelsk doctors who assisted the victims of the explosion near the village of Nenoksa were sent for a medical examination in Moscow. Earlier , three people who worked at the training ground were sent to the capital . According to a 29.RU source, doctors initiated this examination, fearing for their health after contact with patients who arrived from the scene.

- The Government of the Arkhangelsk Region is implementing a set of preventive measures as additional control measures following the results of the incident in the Nenoksy area. Activities include, among other things, examination of employees of medical organizations involved in the provision of medical assistance to victims. This examination is initiated by the workers themselves — they can be examined at the federal center, ”the Government of the Arkhangelsk Region informed 29.RU.
