Here’s a handy map of exactly where the oil fields are. It’s eastern Syria, some in the northeastern Kurdish area, and some further south in Arab areas but mostly controlled by the SDF. https://t.co/0hadSBw0gJ

Kurds say they didn’t sacrifice 11,000 men and women fighting ISIS with US special forces to become guards for remote Syrian oil fields.

US may move battle tanks & troops into eastern Syria “relatively soon” to protect US troops stationed near oil fields controlled by the SDF: US defense official.
Battle tanks are a huge jump in US firepower potentially aimed at Russia/Syria regime. ht @Newsweek for initial rpt.

Hmm...that's a pretty big leap in firepower, especially in Syria.

Russian-Turkish deal on security arrangements in northeastern Syria is a major win for Moscow’s diplomatic approach, but Washington was hardly crushed by it, Middle East experts tell RT.
he arrangement has proven that Russia can act as a mediator in a very complex situation and avert the worst outcomes, like massive loss of civilian life that many predicted could happen if the situation in northeastern Syria escalated, Grigory Lukyanov, senior lecturer at the Moscow-based Higher School of Economics, told RT.

“Russia is taking upon itself certain responsibilities that the United States failed to deliver, both to the Syrian Kurds and to Turkey,” he said. “That was taken in all seriousness in the region and elsewhere.”

A column of Russian military police has crossed the river Euphrates and started moving towards Syrian-Turkish border, Russian Defense Ministry has confirmed on Wednesday.
The transfer marks a start of the implementation of the deal presidents Putin and Erdogan agreed on following their Tuesday meeting.

“Units of Russian military police will assist in ensuring the safety of the population and maintain order, carry out patrols in the area and facilitate the withdrawal of YPG forces to beyond 30 kilometers from the Turkish border,” says the ministry’s statement.

Seems Russia is going for the areas formerly under US protection rather than helping the Kurds up north. Imagine that. Putin still going for the oil.

Meanwhile, the head of the SDF’s political wing was set to travel to the US, as @laraseligman first reported. Talking points obtained by Al-Monitor reveal the delegation plans to ask the Trump admin to help secure the M4 road, stop Turkish airstrikes, and keep US bases.

NEW: Largest US troop withdrawal from Syria is underway. Hundreds of trucks carrying US personnel were observed by CNN gathering near Hasakah, Syria, en route east to the border with Iraq.

This marks the symbolic end of the major US presence in the region.
