EU's first call for defence research topics soon to be released

Post by Drumboy44 » Wed Mar 15, 2017 3:49 am

The European Commission will issue its first call for proposals in May under its new 'preparatory action' (PA) in defence research: a programme that will spend about EUR100 million (USD107 million) during its three-year 2017-19 duration. The call's topics will seek technologies that support the EU Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) objectives, from blast-proof materials to battlefield data fusion capabilities.

The PA's key political aim is to test the feasibility of using EU money to support the development of multinational defence capabilities. If deemed successful it will lay the ground for much larger - and permanent - funding for defence research and development (R&D) in the European Union's next seven-year budget for 2021-28 and beyond.

That's actually kinda funny. EUR 100m is a nice start, but it won't be enough to produce what they actually need, especially over a 2 year period. Supplementary budgets to be introduced by....October...December?

The scope and type of weapon developed will also be limited to politically correct goal of non fatal deterance. Miniature cruise middles with a payload of pepper has to dispers an enemy crossing the boarders.
