On the afternoon of January 10th, the MSDF DD Onami and P-3C patrol aircraft confirmed a submerged submarine in the Japanese contiguous zone east-northeast of Miyako Island (Okinawa Prefecture) navigating in the northwest.
Subsequently, the MSDF confirmed that the submarine continued to navigate in the northwest, and on the morning of January 11th, it exited the Japanese contiguous zone north-northeast of Miyako Island toward the East China Sea. Thereafter, the submarine entered the Japanese contiguous zone northeast of Taisho Island (Okinawa Prefecture).

Additionally, on the morning of January 11th, the MSDF DD Oyodo and DD Onami confirmed a Jiangkai II-class frigate of the Chinese Navy entering the Japanese contiguous zone northeast of Taisho Island. Thereafter, the vessel once exited the contiguous zone and entered the zone northeast of Taisho Island once again.

This was immediately reported to the acting Minister of Defense, who issued the following two instructions:

(1) Devote utmost efforts to information gathering and surveillance in preparation for any possible contingency.
(2) Closely cooperate with relevant ministries and agencies as well as the United States and other countries concerned.
