Well, my question was answered. What a messed up situation!

Shit we don't need turkey and Russia at each other. This rings a nasty situation.

Most decisions leading to situations such as these are simulated and probable effects known well before hand... The outcomes in the upcoming days/weeks/months will be indicative of what is happening and why.

Since Turkey is taking offensive action against a Russian ally, it's not that surprising. Fortunately, it also means that Turkey won't be able to invoke Article 5 of the NATO treaty. Maybe allowing Turkey to go on the offensive was part of the the plan all along, so they wouldn't be able to call on other NATO members for help. Turkey is doing a great job of pissing off both NATO and CSTO, which is quite an accomplishment, and a terrible strategy for long-term survival.
