Emails accusing German soldiers stationed in Lithuania of rape were sent to local news outlets and the parliamentary president. NATO officials allege that Russia is targeting the military alliance.
German soldiers stationed in Lithuania have been the target of false rape claims, German news magazine "Spiegel" first reported on Thursday. NATO diplomats told Spiegel that they viewed this as an attack aimed at undermining the presence of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in Eastern Europe, likely perpetrated by Russia.
Emails claiming that German soldiers had raped an underage Lithuanian girl were sent to the president of the Lithuanian parliament and various Lithuanian media outlets on February 14.
Lithuanian authorities investigated the charges and found no evidence that any of the claims made in the emails were true. "To our knowledge, Lithuanian police investigations came to the conclusion that there were neither a victim nor possible witnesses nor any perpetrators", a spokesperson for the German ministry of defense said.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg told reporters in Brussels that there had been several previous attempts to spread disinformation about NATO and that the organization was on constant alert

Russia was behind a false report of a rape by German soldiers in Lithuania that was intended to undermine support for NATO's new eastern force, a senior NATO general said on Saturday, warning Europe to expect more such "fake news.
Petr Pavel, who heads NATO's military committee, said he also hoped to hold the first telephone call in more than two years with Russia's military chiefs in coming weeks. There he will outline why NATO believes its biggest military build-up since the end of the Cold War is not a threat to the Kremlin.
Pavel, a Czech army general, said .."It is clearly fake news and I believe we should expect more of this," Pavel, told Reuters in an interview, citing conversations with the German and Lithuanian defense ministers.
"Russia is not pleased by the deployment of NATO troops closer to its border so it will likely use legal means, such as propaganda and they will try to influence public opinion against the deployments," Pavel said.
"It will get stronger ... but we will be transparent, consistent."

McCarthyism. One is expected to simply accept the claims of the authority figures. No evidence is being presented (in the DW and Reuters articles) that German soldiers indeed raped Lithuanian women, but no evidence is being presented that Russia is responsible for that allegation.

Though, there was this incident in January:
"Recruits should have been tied up and sexually forced into a barracks in Baden-Württemberg. The Minister of Defense speaks of 'disgusting events' ... The Bundeswehr is confronted with the allegation of sexual assault by elite soldiers. As the Mirror reported , seven soldiers have been dismissed. The Bundeswehr estimated that more cases would be known. According to the report, the attacks occurred in the training of elite soldiers in the Staufer barracks in Pfullendorf in Baden-Württemberg. Internal and hitherto secret investigations have shown that sexually sadistic practices have apparently been used in the training of combatants ... Defense Minister of the Leyen (CDU) confirmed the report on Friday evening ... recruits, for example, would have had to move out naked before their comrades. Supervisors had filmed - allegedly for training purposes. In addition, male and female recruits had been introduced tamponade into the anus. This too had been photographed."

This is a problem commonly found in any military, including that of the United States. Anyone whose serviced in the US military in the past decade will certainly be aware that "rape education" has become a priority. A very high priority. They will have heard the statistics, primarily involving male soldiers sexually assaulting other male soldiers. Such is the result of locking a group of men into a unit together, where they worship fitness and one another's bodies, and are also trained and conditioned to lack empathy. I could go into greater detail, but fellow servicemen will understand what I'd be talking about, and civilians who have never worn a uniform will not. Suffice to say, the problem is common, indeed not only in the United States military, but across the world. It would be unsurprising for German soldiers to rape women local to the area in which they've been forward deployed to.

Still, I've not see evidence that this is the case. I only see NATO perhaps attempting to put out a fire, and obfuscating by blaming Russia for igniting it. Blaming Russia, without supplying evidence in any form.
